The Firebirds fell 3-0 to Beavercreek at Fairmont Park Stadium Thursday evening. Despite the scoreline, the Fairmont defense put forth a strong effort to limit the #8 ranked Beavers to three goals.

Beavercreek scored twice in the first two minutes of the match, and controlled the ball for most of the opening twenty minutes. The first good scoring opportunity for the Firebirds was in the 15th minute on a diagonal ball played from striker Pilote Luck to midfielder Sam Fiscus wide on the left side. Fiscus found opposite winger Pacifique Shukuru on the cross into the box, but his shot from 8 yards out went over the crossbar.

Shortly thereafter, the defense kept the game close. Outside back Eric Mugisha denied Beavercreek with a goal line clearance, cutting out a dangerous cross with a header. Center back Dominic Lander-Boulis intercepted an interior pass headed for an onrushing attacker into the Fairmont penalty area.

Fairmont looked to have drawn one back in the 26th on a Fiscus cross to striker Nic Enciso, who beat the Beavercreek keeper, but the offsides flag went up and the center referee waved off the goal. In the prelude to the play, midfielder Sam Mugenzi did some great work to advance the ball from the middle to the attacking third.

Goalkeeper Ace Uhrig performed heroics near the end of the first half to keep Fairmont in the match. On a Beavercreek break in the 37th, Uhrig came all the way out of the penalty area to win a one-on-one against a Beavercreek attacker. In the 38th, a Beavercreek shot on a free kick was headed to the upper 90 on the near side but for Uhrig’s aerial save.

Fairmont opened the second half with a golden opportunity. Luck picked off a pass from a Beavercreek center back in the penalty area, but his shot from 10 yards out was deflected wide.

Beavercreek picked up another goal midway through the half. The Fairmont defense stopped several Beavercreek counterattacks, but the Firebirds could not break through the Beavercreek line.

The Firebirds travel to Wayne High School for the second time this season on Tuesday, October 13. Kickoff is 7:15 pm.
