In a match that began Tuesday, September 29 and finished Saturday, October 3, the Firebirds lost 2-1 to Miamisburg High School.

During the Tuesday evening part of the match, most of the play was in Fairmont’s middle and defensive thirds, but the Firebird defense prevented any dangerous opportunities for Miamisburg.

A good offensive chance for Fairmont came in the eleventh minute. With a quick transition from defense to offense, the Firebirds worked the ball downfield on a nice connection and run from sophomore winger Pascal Salama. In the attacking third, good lateral movement of the ball, from the right to the left, and then back to the middle, opened a window for a shot from the 18 by senior striker Pilote Luck, with the ball going over the crossbar.

In the 23rd minute, lightning flashed across the sky. The weather refused to cooperate, and the sides had to wait until Saturday afternoon to finish the match.

Two minutes into the continuation, Miamisburg scored off a corner kick. Miamisburg threatened the rest of the half, but Fairmont’s defensive trio, center back Sam Fiscus, center back Dominic Lander-Boullis, and holding midfielder Will Meilstrup prevented further damage. Winning several duels throughout the match, Meilstrup was particularly effective in minimizing Miamisburg’s movement of the ball through the center of the field.

The Firebirds opened the second half in a three center back set, with Fiscus higher upfield to help generate offense.

Senior GK Ace Uhrig kept Fairmont in the match with a huge save at the 48 minute mark from a one-on-one inside the penalty area.

In the 66th minute, a cross from Fiscus on the right flank went to junior midfielder Ryan Schreck and then on to senior striker Pilote Luck, but the Firebirds could not corral the ball for a shot. Three minutes later, however, Fairmont leveled the score. Pascal Salama collected the throw-in, beat the Miamisburg defender 1v1 and played the ball across the 6′ to Pilote Luck. Luck’s deflection was blocked but fell to Ryan Schreck who tucked the ball away into the far post. It was Schreck’s first career goal.

Unfortunately, a penalty kick was awarded to Miamisburg in the 70th minute and put the Vikings back into the lead. The Firebirds spent the final ten minutes trying to equalize, but could not break through the Viking defense.

The Firebirds host Wayne High School on Tuesday, October 6, with kickoff at 7:15 pm.
