The Firebirds picked up a win on the road with a 3-1 victory over Wayne High School Tuesday evening. Fairmont jumped out to an early lead with a through ball from Sam Fiscus on the right flank to Sam Mugenzi, whose shot beat the keeper in the seventh minute of the match.

Fairmont had many more chances on the night, created from center backs playing cross-field diagonal passes to change the point of attack, outside backs making wide runs, and central midfielders collecting loose balls to maintain pressure on the Warrior defense.

Francisco Negrete was particularly effective from his defensive midfielder spot in helping the Firebirds keep possession by recycling the ball to the defenders. Outside back Trent Webb, had a good evening cutting out passes from Wayne defenders, taking the space available, and turning them into transitional chances for Fairmont.

The Firebirds struck again in the 15th minute. Sam Mugenzi got to the end line with the ball and put a hard, low cross to Pilote Luck. Luck’s finishing touch made the play look easier than it probably was.

Defensively, the Firebirds had to contend with a few speedy Wayne attackers, whose opportunities came primarily on counter attacks. A Wayne attacker got into the box on a 1v1 22 minutes in, but goalkeeper Ace Uhrig made the save.

With a minute left in the half, Julian Doninger let loose a shot that was goalbound but for a diving save from the Wayne keeper.

Fairmont had yet another opportunity to increase their lead on a penalty kick one minute into the second half, but could not convert it. Three minutes later, a beautiful cross from winger Bryce Roberts was just out of reach of a sprinting Pilote Luck.

The Firebirds earned their third goal of the night in the 54th minute, with a Luck pass to Mugenzi and a shot with chef’s kiss placement lofted over the goalkeeper.

Two minutes later, Uhrig was called upon to make an acrobatic save to his near post. Wayne eventually found a goal in the 69th minute to ruin the Firebirds’ clean sheet.

In the 71st, Doninger played a lovely ball over the top for Roberts, now moved to the center forward spot, to run on to. His shot was turned away by a quality save from the Wayne goalkeeper.

In the 76th, Mugenzi played a ball wide to Ryan Schreck on the right flank. Shreck’s shot was denied by a great save from the Wayne keeper.

The Firebirds close out the regular season against Springfield High School on Thursday, October 15 at Fairmont Park Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:15 pm.
