In a tough match, the Fairmont varsity boys fell to Troy High School 6-0 on Saturday night. Fairmont came out looking strong with an early chance on a free kick earned by Ace Uhrig (JR) 30 yards from the Trojan goal. For the first fifteen minutes of the 1st half, the Firebird defense did an excellent job containing the Trojan attack. Fairmont showed some nice combination passing and running off the ball along the right flank. It looked like the Firebirds were building some momentum until Troy scored two quick goals in the 17th and 18th minutes, the first off a deep turnover, and the second catching the Firebirds in transition.
The Fairmont boys worked hard to regain their composure. A great scoring opportunity came in the 28th minute when Fabrice Uwihirwe (SR), Luck Pilote (JR), and Tyler Adams (SO) cracked open the Trojan defense with good movement and passing, but could not beat Troy’s keeper. The remainder of the 1st half featured back and forth play, with neither side definitively asserting dominance.
The Trojan offense sealed the match’s outcome with three goals in the the first four minutes of the 2nd half. The Firebirds never fully recovered, and rushed the scoring chances they managed to create in the second half.
Colin Stewart (JR) was a bright spot for Fairmont by putting in some good minutes at the middle of the Firebird defense to deny the central attack from the Trojan offense.
The Firebirds take on The Miami Valley School on Tuesday, September 17 at Fairmont Park Stadium. Kickoff is 7:00 pm.
