In a match that echoed that of the JV Firebirds’, the Fairmont varsity boys dropped a demanding battle against the Springfield Wildcats, 2-1 on Tuesday evening. Springfield scored once in each half — on a breakaway from a misstep on the Firebird backline in the first, and from a direct free kick just outside the box in the second. The Fairmont defense did well to limit the damage from the Springfield top two in the attack, whose combined scoring statistics are near the top of the GWOC standings.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with Springfield having perhaps slightly more of the ball than Fairmont. The Fairmont goal was perhaps the goal of the season for the Firebirds. In the 33rd minute, Ryan Schreck (SO) delivered a corner to the middle of the box. Josue Martinez (SR) headed the ball back toward the near post where a calm Tyler Adams (SO) half-volleyed the ball into the net. Just a minute later, Springfield nearly got the goal back, but for a great save by Seth Tyson (SR). Each team also had late chances in the first half, with an Ace Uhrig (JR) shot going over the crossbar in the 38th, and a likely goal-saving tackle from Colin Stewart (JR) in the 40th.
Tyson continued to make circus saves and venture out of his penalty area to clear balls in the second half. Fairmont’s best scoring chances came late in the game when the Firebirds pushed numbers forward. Despite the hustle and the effort, however, Fairmont could note find an equalizer.
The Firebirds conclude their regular season on Thursday, October 10 at home versus Miamisburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 pm with senior night festivities beginning at 7:00 pm.
