The Firebirds fell 2-0 to the team slightly up north, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Lumberjacks of Oakwood picked up one goal in each half. Fairmont nearly struck early, when in the 3rd minute, a Luck Pilote shot (JR) bounced off the frame, and nearly struck late when a pass from Ahmad Hamdan (FR) led to another shot by Pilote in the 39th minute that went over the crossbar. In between, Josue Martinez (SR) headed a free kick from Tyler Adams (SO) that Oakwood’s keeper turned away with a high-quality save. [Despite these chances, the Firebirds struggled to build a consistent attack in the first half.]
The second half saw a change in the Firebirds’ organization. Midfielder Youcef Hennaoui (FR) helped control the game in the middle third with some combination play. In the 48th minute, a lovely set of passes and movement from Hennaoui to Fiscus to Fabrice Uwihirwe (SR) back to Hennaoui and finally to Pilote led to a shot on goal. The last moments of the game saw Uwihirwe in on the Oakwood keeper. Uwihirwe seemed bound to score, but an unlucky touch saw the ball pop up straight into the keeper’s hands.
The Firebirds’ next match is at Springfield High School on Tuesday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The regular season game will be a preview of the teams’ tournament clash scheduled for Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 pm. That game will also be played at Springfield High School.
