The JV Birds hosted Miamisburg on a cool fall evening for a rematch to show what the team is really made of, after Miamisburg soundly beat Fairmont 5-0 on their home turf earlier in the season. Tonight was a totally different team as the players played their hearts out with the team’s best overall effort of the season. Every player, including the parents in the stands, were hungry for a victory. From the first whistle, the team was able to dictate the tempo of the game with aggressive defense with the midfield of Youcef Hennaoui, Mason Mata, Riley McNamara and Willy Aleluya winning many 50-50 balls. The JV Birds were able to get 6 shots on goal with a couple of crosses into the box with a missed opportunity for a goal. The first half ended with no score.
In the second half, at the 30:30 mark, striker Jerod Hargrave almost got the first goal of the game but was blocked by the keeper. With the ball still alive in the box and the keeper out of position, Ryan Geiger facing away from the goal attempted to hit the ball with the back of his head only to be denied by a Miamisburg defender. About a minute later, defender Gradey Dombrauckas reset a ball to keeper Bien Bisetsa. Two Miamisburg players applied pressure to Bien whose pass was blocked by one of the Miamisburg players. Fortunately, the opponent could not capitalize as Miamisburg was flagged for offsides. The young Birds were not deterred as they continued to possess the ball with great ball movement. Both teams had a few opportunities as the half continued. Fairmont had the edge on shots taken with 11 while limiting Miamisburg to just 5. Defenders Gradey, Captain Sam Dewald, Payton Redmon and keeper Bien Bisetsa were able to make the necessary stops which killed any Miamisburg momentum.
Finally, at the 7:17 mark, midfielder Mason Mata slotted a ball into the box to Jerod Hargrave who was able to cut the ball back to fellow striker Ryan Geiger for the necessary goal. The JV Birds attempted to pad the lead with 4 more shots that were either wide of the goal or an easy save for the Miamisburg keeper. With 30 seconds left in the game, Fairmont fouled Miamisburg at the sideline. The Miamisburg set piece was served near the 18 only to lose possession with a weak kick that dribbled wide of the goal. Keeper Bien Bisetsa was able to let the last 8 seconds of the game run out as the JV Birds improved their record to 4-5-2 with two wins in a row.
The JV Birds travel to Centerville on Thursday night, October 1 at 5:30 where they hope to keep up the winning streak.
