The Fairmont JV Boys soccer team earned their second win of the season, and second straight shutout, in a 2-0 battle over Fairfield High School. Fairfield started strong but could not break through the Firebird defense, anchored by center backs Colin Stewart (JR) and Dominic Lander-Boulis (FR).
After weathering the initial storm, the Firebirds took control of the match and were rewarded with a goal by in the 13th minute by Ahmad Hamdan (FR), assisted by Julian Doninger (SO). Ten minutes later, Hamdan found the back of the net again to put the Firebirds up 2-0. Even though Fairmont had most of the ball in the first half, and created several good scoring chances, the Firebird defense was still busy. First-half goalkeeper Nic Enciso (SO) recorded five saves to keep the Firebirds ahead.
After the halftime break, Fairfield pressured for most of the second half, and kept the Firebirds’ defense and midfield busy. The high block from Fairfield left open a few opportunities for Fairmont’s offense on the counter-attack, but the Firebirds were unable to add insurance goals. Second-half goalkeeper Joe Meilstrup (FR) made ten saves to help secure the victory and the clean sheet. The cheer from the Fairmont sideline, “Joe says no!” is a succinct summary of the second half.
The Firebird JV Boys take on the Elks from Centerville High School at Fairmont Park Stadium on Tuesday, September 10. Kickoff is 5:30 pm.
