The Lady Firebirds played host to the Wayne Warriors on Saturday, as we celebrated Senior Night for our four Seniors.
The Birds wasted no time working the ball around efficiently and applying heavy pressure on the Warrior Defense. As the clock approached eight and a half minutes into the game, Fairmont Defender Sophia Grossman cleared the ball off a Wayne attack. This created a quick counterattack breakaway for speedster Sophomore Annabel Shone. She took a touch around the left side of the diving goalkeeper to create a wide open tap into the goal, for her First Goal of the Season.
Keeping the majority control the Birds earned a corner kick. Junior Julia Schloneger quickly passed the ball to Senior Sophia Grossman, who was running towards the right corner of the 6-yard box. Grossman ripped a shot, ricocheting it off of a Warrior defender, into the right side of the goal for her First Goal of the Season.
The Firebirds continued to work the ball around against a physical Warrior team creating many more opportunities. With four minutes remaining in the half, Sophia Grossman delivered a perfect pass out to Annabel Shone. Shone sent in a cross from the corner of the 18-yard box, to the far post. The ball bounced once as Fairmont’s leading goal scorer, Keira Erling, caught up to the it and was able to head the ball into the back of the net, nearly running into the left post. Keira accounts for 7 of the 18 goals scored by Firebird players this season.
Going into the half with a 3-0 lead the Firebirds were confident in their control of the game, but were going to continue to press the Warrior defense and look to add on to their lead. About five minutes into the the 2nd half Julia Schloneger struck the ball, nearly scoring a goal, as it hit off the post and bounced back out away from the goal. Wayne continued to play physically, as a Yellow Card was issued for a foul inside their own goalbox. This gave Firebirds a Penalty Shot opportunity. Senior Allison Bauman, the player that was fouled, elected to take the PK. Allison capitalized as she sent the ball past the keeper with ease, to the left side of the goal. This gave Fairmont a 4-0 lead.
With 9 minutes remaining in the game, Annabel Shone dribbled the ball down the left sideline. She got to the baseline, where she was able to cut past a defender. Shone took a couple touches, as she entered the 18 yard box. She noticed that the goalkeeper had taken a couple steps out towards her so she quickly decided to chip the ball to the far post, knowing that Keira Erling was standing there just in case it needed help getting into the back of the net. The ball needed no help though, as it went straight into the goal to increase the lead to 5-0.
Time began winding down in the game, as Wayne began pushing more players forward. With about four minutes remaining in the game they found themselves in an offbalanced 4v3 attack. The Wayne player split the Firebird defense to create an open shot from the left corner of the 18 yard box. The ball soared up and over the head of the goalkeeper, giving Wayne their lone goal. The game would go on to end at 5-1 in favor of the Fairmont Firebirds!
The JV Lady Firebirds displayed dominance as they outshot the Warrior JV team 20-2. The Birds weren’t able to find the back of the net until 10:41 remaining in the first half. A perfect corner kick placement by Corinne Tew found the foot of Caitlin Blair for a beautiful volley past the goalkeeper. The Birds would take this lone goal into half time with them as they led 1-0.
Fairmont was confident that they could produce more offense as they stepped up their intensity. With 15 minutes remaining in the game the Birds struck a second time, as Reagan Daley created a turnover around the opposing 18 yard box. She took the ball to the baseline and crossed the ball, on the ground, across the 6-yard box as it passed by the goalkeeper, a defender, and an offensive player. The ball ended up perfectly at the feet of JV’s leading goal scorer Emma Van Nest, as she tapped it into the goal for her 6th goal of the season, in just as many games.
This opened up the flood gates. Farimont got an extra pep in their step and scored three more times within an 11 minute span. Exactly two minutes after the second goal was scored, Caitlin Blair connected with her 2nd goal of the game, as she created a turnover inside the 18 yard box, shooting it into the lower left corner of the goal.
A minute later Corinne Tew took a free kick from 40 yards out, next to the right sideline. The ball found Caitlin off a bounce. Caitlin headed the ball to a wide open Maddie Haight, who volleyed it into the bottom left corner for her First Career Goal!
Just under four minutes remained in the game, but the Firebirds weren’t done yet. The ball was played to Cora Fiscus inside the right side of the 18-yard box. She was immediately hit hard by the incoming defender, but managed to keep her feet under her. The defender fell down, allowing Cora to take her time in delivering a great pass on the ground to Audrey Lundgren who struck the ball straight up into the top of the goal. The Firebirds would go on to a 5-0 Shutout Victory behind goalkeeper Lily Nickell, along with a strong defense by a rotating line of defenders Sam Pochet, Megan Sherick, Annabelle Seeds, Corinne Tew, and Sophie Watters.
