Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Soccer · Women’s Soccer – Beats Northmont

Both JV and Varsity Women’s soccer teams came out Victorious on Wednesday against the Northmont Thunderbolts on limited opportunities.

JV, riding a 3 game shut-out win streak, came out of the gates pumped up and ready to defend their home turf.  As usual, the Defense (Megan Sherick, Sam Pochet, and Riley Hodgson) stepped up big, only allowing 3 shots on goal.  Lily Nickell stopped all 3 attempts by the Thunderbolts, one of which was a breakaway.  The lone goal of the game came in the 1st half when shots by Kierra Thornton and Savanna Vickers both were both deflected by the goalkeeper.  Freshman Megan Sherick was perfectly positioned as the ball came bouncing her way from the second deflection.  She connected with a strong shot into the back of the net, tallying her 1st Career Goal!  This would be all the Firebirds needed as they held the 1-0 lead through half time and the 2nd half.

JV remains Undefeated at Home, with 1 home game remaining against Springfield on 10/9.  They will take their 4 straight shut-out win streak into Xenia as they hope to keep it going against the Bucs.  With their 8-2-1 Record (with 4-5 games remaining this season), they have secured their 2nd Straight Winning Season and 2nd Ever Winning Season, according to the Fairmont Book of Records.  Awesome Job Ladies!!!  Keep up the Fantastic hard work and dedication you are putting forth!!

Varsity had an interesting start, as they found themselves down a goal 21 seconds into the game, on what looked like a possible off-sides.  The Thunderbolt player took the ball to goal on a breakaway up the right side of the field and blasted it past the Fairmont goalkeeper.  Shocked, but motivated to step up their game, Fairmont would not look back from there as they quickly evened it up 1-1, only four and a half minutes into the game.  Keira Erling split a few defenders with her pass to Senior Kierra Thornton.  Kierra quickly collected the pass, on the run, and beat the last 2 defenders as she created a breakaway and was able to calmly slide the hard shot on the ground past the keeper and into the bottom left of the goal.  Keira Erling is now tied with Allison Bauman as the Assist Leader on Varsity with 4.  Shortly after that, Northmont had a shot rip off the right post and fly across the face of the goal, which was then scooped up by goalkeeper O’Malley Quinlan.  The momentum swung back and forth as the Fairmont Defense did a superb job keeping up with the speed of several offensive threats, limiting the clean shots to a minimum.   With about 18 minutes remaining in the first half speedsters Sophomore Millie Bishop and Freshman Annabel Shone flew down the field, into opponent territory.  Millie sent in a perfect pass to the right side of Annabel, who had a player on her back to the left.  She was able to keep her full-on sprint, as she took a set up touch and hammered it past the goalkeeper from right around the edge of the 18 yard box.  This would give Annabel her 4th goal of the season (Goal leader on the Varsity Squad) and the Firebirds the 2-1 lead.  Northmont tried to create good opportunities, but were met with a stingy Fairmont Defense and Goalkeeper.  The Thunderbolts managed to ring 2 more shots off the posts in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.

The Firebirds would go into halftime with the 2-1 lead.  As the 2nd half progressed, Northmont would go on to hit the post 2 more times.  Neither team was able to tally a goal in the 2nd half, giving the Firebirds the big Win against a tough conference team.  The Varsity Squad also remains Undefeated on their Home Turf having 2 Ties and 4 Wins with only 1 game remaining at home against Springfield on 10/9.  They improve their record to an even 4-4-3 with 5 games remaining before the tournament begins.
