Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Soccer · Women’s Soccer – JV Blanks Sidney, Varsity Ties

The Lady Firebirds traveled to Sidney to face the Yellow Jackets in a non-conference match.

JV earned a Shut-Out 5-0 victory over Sidney, while allowing Zero shots on goal thanks to tough defensive play by Riley Hodgson, Sam Pochet, Megan Sherick, and Ella Lamb.  Goalkeeper Lily Nickell recorded the shut-out, with second half help from Schuyler Watters.

  • This is JV’s  3rd consecutive Shut-Out win (5th Shut-Out for the Season), putting them at a staggering 7-2-1 record, with 6 games still remaining!!!

The Lady Firebirds struck early and continued their constant pressure throughout the game.  Two and a Half minutes into the game the Firebirds earned a throw-in along the left side of the field in the attacking third.  Sam Pochet was able to catch the defenders off guard when she quickly grabbed the ball and hurled it over the defense to Kierra Thornton, who went straight at the goal on a breakaway.  Kierra dribbled in close and slid the ball past the goalkeeper.  Three minutes later Kierra dribbled the ball past the defenders along the left side of the field, all the way to the baseline.  She took the baseline almost all the way to the post, causing the goalkeeper to commit to guarding her.  Kierra tapped the ball to the center, past the over-committed goalkeeper to Savanna Vickers, who put the Birds up 2-0.  The Firebirds worked the ball around the back line beautifully throughout the half, constantly switching the field and creating many creative opportunities.  With Two and a Half minutes remaining in the half, Liesl Kuschnerus crossed the ball from the left side, where Kierra Thornton was able to receive it and tally her second goal of the game, first multi-goal game of the season, and became the team-leader in goals for the season with 5.

As the second half began, Fairmont continued to keep the pressure on the Yellow Jackets and were able to score early again.  Five minutes into the second half Mac Donoher found herself heavily guarded on the right side of the field around the 18 yard box.  She dropped the back to an uncovered Ella Lamb who blasted a shot from 30 yards out, floating it overtop of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.  Mac now leads the team as she tallied her 5th assist of the season.  With Five minutes left in the game the Firebirds struck for the final time when Captain Mary Ayres passed the ball to Savanna Vickers, who used her speed to get through the defenders.  She capitalized on her golden opportunity around the 6 yard box and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the goal, giving Fairmont the 5-0 lead.  This gave Savanna her Second Goal of the game, her first career multi-goal game, and moved her into 2nd for leading the team in goals with 4 this season.

The Varsity squad played a tough game, giving themselves many great opportunities, but were unable to capitalize in the first half.  One of these opportunities came off a corner kick where Mia Howard received the ball at the corner of the 18 and put up a hard shot that looped over everybody inside the box, but ended up striking off the crossbar and going out of play.  The Firebirds and Yellow Jackets would go into half time at a 0-0 tie.

The second half began and the opportunities kept coming.  8 minutes into the second half Jules Piersall was able to slip the ball through the defense to Millie Bishop, who blazed past the defense to create a breakaway.  As she dribbled the ball towards the right side of the goal, the goalie began to commit to the ball.  Millie kept it on the ground with a hard shot past the goalkeeper, giving Fairmont the 1-0 lead.  Ten minutes went by and the Yellow Jackets were able to create several opportunities leading to their top-goal scorer receiving the ball on the right side of midfield.  She carried the ball across the field and towards the goal, where she put up an off-balanced shot from about 25 yards out.  The shot caught the wind perfectly as it carried up and over the Firebirds goalkeeper evening up the game at 1-1.  The game would then get extremely intense, with both teams trying to get the go-ahead goal.  Neither team was able to find the back of the net, while the Firebirds had the best opportunity from a breakaway.  Sofiyah Griffith ran full speed down the left side of the field and chipped the ball into Millie Bishop, who was also at top speed. Millie was met almost immediately by the charging goalkeeper.  She made the quick decision to chip the ball over the goalkeeper, in what looked like a certain go-ahead goal.  The ball bounced a few times and struck the right post then slowly rolled away from the goal.  They would end in a tie, as both teams worked very hard the entire game.
