Girls Junior Varsity Field Hockey, Girls Varsity Field Hockey · Field Hockey Falls to 1-3 After Rough Start


The Fairmont field hockey team started their season on August 20th against league opponent, St. Ursula Academy.  After an hour rain delay, the game got started.  The Birds held SUA to 1 goal in the first half but fell behind letting the Bulldogs score 4 more goals.  The game ended with a final score of SUA 5 and Fairmont 0.  Stella Fiscus (2020) had 1 defensive save.  Zoe Barnes (2022) had 6 goalie saves and Lucia Pett (2022) had 2 goalie saves.  Fairmont had 3 shots on goal, 0 offensive corners and 3 defensive corners.

On Saturday August 24th the Birds traveled to Columbus to play Bexley High School.  Fairmont held Bexley to 1 goal in the first half.  The Birds continued to play tough but were unable to stop them from scoring 2 more times.  The final score was 3-0 with the game going to Bexley.  Grace Wetzel (2022) had 1 defensive save.  Barnes had 4 goalie saves.  Fairmont had 2 shots on goal, 5 offensive corners and 7 defensive corners.

Fairmont was scheduled to play Summit on Monday, August 26th but the game was rescheduled due to weather.  The game is now scheduled October 1st at 6pm at Summit Country Day.

On Wednesday, August 28th the Birds were scheduled to play the Braves from Indian Hill, but due to traffic and other delays the game was cancelled.  The plan is to reschedule but is till TBD.

Finally the Birds played their first game of the week (3rd scheduled) against Talawanda High School at Miami University’s field hockey field on August 31st.  After a 2 hour storm delay, the Birds took the field.  They had a rough start to the game not being able to score in the first half.  With 8:24 left in the game Talawanda commit a foul that earned a 2 minute penalty.  Fairmont took advantage of the “power play” by scoring 2 goals within 1 minute by Lena Barr (2023) and Sarah Freiberger (2023) with an assist from Stella Holmes (2022).  The final score of the game was 2-0 with the Birds taking home their first win of the season.  Barnes had 1 goalie save.  Fairmont had 4 offensive corners and 2 defensive corners.

Fairmont played another league game on September 4th against Mount Notre Dame.  MND came out strong by scoring with 5 minutes of the start of the game.  They continued to dominate and score 3 more goals in the first half.  In the second half Fairmont slowed MND down but still game up 2 more goals.  The final score of the game was 6-0 in MND favor.  Barnes had 24 goalie saves and Pett had 2 goalie saves.  Fairmont had 1 offensive corner and 16 defensive corners.

Fairmont’s next game is against the Hilliard Lynx on Saturday, September 7th at 10am.  The game will be played at a neutral site, Oakwood’s Lane Stadium.
