Girls Varsity basketball concluded their opening weekend by participating in the Journey to the Tourney at Lakota West High School. The Firebirds opened-up their season on Saturday afternoon vs Solon High School. Solon was the Division I State Runner-Up from last season. The Birds were victorious in the opener 70-58. Madeline Westbeld broke the Journey to Tourney scoring record by scoring 34 points and adding in 10 rebounds in the victory. Mali Morgan-Elliott added in 12 points and 11 rebounds.
On Sunday, the Birds took on the Newark Wildcats. Newark was 25-2 last season and beat the #1 team in the State of Indiana on Friday night by 20. The Firebirds fought through-out the game and were with-in 2 points mid-way through the 4th. The Wildcats made some huge baskets with under 3 to play to pull-out the victory vs the Firebirds. Newark won the contest 68-57. Madeline Westbeld had 19 points and Madison Bartley chipped in with 17 for the Birds. The Firebirds are 1-1 on the season and travel to Wayne on Wednesday.
The JV girls basketball picked-up their first win of the season on Sunday vs Mason. The Firebirds did a great job working together after losing a tough battle vs Fort Laromie on Saturday. The JV Birds are also 1-1 on the season and also travel to Wayne on Wednesday.
