Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Soccer · Women’s Soccer Tops Piqua

Fairmont Women’s Soccer traveled to Piqua to take on the Indians and brought home 2 well deserved wins.

JV stretches their win streak to 5, with 1 game remaining in the season.  With this win they have evened out their record at 7-7-1.

The ball found the back of the net 4 times in the first half, 3 times for the Firebirds.  Piqua had the 1st goal off a throw in over the defense that turned into a breakaway.  That is all the Firebirds allowed as they tightened up the defense and began creating more offense.  3 straight goals gave Fairmont the 3-1 lead at half time with goals by Allison Bauman (2) and Kierra Thornton.  In the second half Liesl Kuschnerus netted the final goal as the JV won 4-1.  Assists for the game were credited to Allison Bauman, Madison Reis, and Kierra Thornton.  The Firebirds outshot their opponent 26 to 4.  Kierra Thornton has regained the lead on JV for points (13) and Goals (6).

Varsity was coming off a win and fought hard for another as they toppled Piqua 6-1 by 6 different players, 3 being Freshmen.  The Firebirds had a comfortable 3 to 0 lead going into halftime.  Kierra Thornton snuck in the first goal off a breakaway that was set up by a through ball from Meghan Deis for her 2nd Varsity goal of the season.  Freshman Millie Bishop netted her 2nd of the season after a far post shot blasted off the post and into the goal, with the assist from a square pass by Kierra Thornton about 15 yards out.  Cami Copeland scored her 1st career Varsity goal as she struck the ball up and over the keeper, bouncing it off the crossbar, straight down across the line, then bounced up into the top of the net off a pass from Keira Erling.

The 2nd half started with a quick goal by Piqua from a one-touch shot off a cross across the goal.  About 12 minutes into the 2nd half Piqua was penalized with a Red Card, putting the Firebirds up a player for the remainder of the game.  They took advantage of their numbers and capitalized 3 times, as they began to dominate possession.  Freshman Mia Howard was the first to score in the 2nd half as she got to a bouncing ball right in front of the goalkeeper.  Mia struck the ball overtop of the goalkeeper, which was diving straight towards her, and into the top center of the net for her 2nd of the season.  The 5th goal of the game came off a cross by Meghan Deis where Drew Barr connected with a perfect turn-around header as she going away from the goal to record her 4th of the season.  Freshman Keira Erling does it again, scoring another goal from 25-30 yards out with a laser shot overtop of the keeper, into the top of the net.  She leads Varsity with 7 goals on the season. Emma Fife had a strong night in the goal with several big saves, only allowing 1 goal.
