Despite the summer-like temperatures, the Fairmont men’s varsity soccer team came out cold against Wayne on Tuesday night, giving up a soft first-half goal just a few minutes into the game.
But thankfully, the Birds warmed up as the game moved to the second half, scoring their first goal with 28 minutes to play. Senior captain Peyton Barnes worked his way down the right flank, bypassing defenders and sending a strong cross in front of the goal. The ball deflected off of the Wayne goalkeeper, and senior Lucas Gregory was there waiting to poke the ball into the back of the net.
The second Fairmont goal came just a few minutes later and was practically a mirror image of the first. Peyton again created the opportunity, dribbling past defenders and sending in a strong cross, this time around the keeper, and Lucas was there to meet the pass, finishing convincingly into the goal.
The third goal started with a long free kick served by senior captain Miles Kelley, and Peyton knocked the ball down toward junior captain Josue Martinez. Josue wasted no time, hustling to the ball and smashing it through the crowded box to score.
Junior goalkeeper Seth Tyson defended the goal well after the early Wayne score, including brushing off a few swings from a Wayne player after making a save.
The JV Birds also excelled against Wayne, beating the Warriors 2-0 on great goals by sophomores Wally Timmer and Adam Boussaha. Junior goalkeeper Carter Haas kept another clean sheet in goal, his third of the year.
The Birds next play Oakwood this Saturday at home for Senior Day. JV will play at 1 p.m. and varsity at 3 p.m. Seniors will be honored before the varsity game at 2:30.
