The Fairmont men’s varsity soccer team posted its second straight shutout Tuesday night, blanking Springfield, 2-0 at Fairmont Park Stadium.
Three minutes into the second half, senior captain Peyton Barnes got the ball in the offensive end, drove past two defenders into the right side of the box, then hit a beautiful low shot to the far post to beat the keeper and put the Firebirds up 1-0.
Seven minutes later, junior captain Josue Martinez drew a foul in the attacking third, setting up a key free kick about 28 yards out. Senior captain Miles Kelley lined up the shot from the left side and curled it into the top left corner to make it 2-0.
Senior Rob Jenkins and junior Seth Tyson combined on the shutout in goal, with help from a few key blocks and clearances by senior center back Trevor Conlon. Martinez and sophomores Sam Fiscus and Zane Crousser were busy in midfield, breaking up Springfield attacks.
Fairmont’s varsity is now 3-7-1 on the season, and has allowed one goal in the past three games combined.
Fairmont’s JV tied Springfield 0-0, with junior GK Carter Haas posting the shutout. After a rough start, JV has two wins and a tie in its last four games.
