On a windy, cold and extremely wet Saturday, the Fairmont JV men’s soccer team showed some spark and spirit by grinding out its first victory over a solid Oak Hills team.
Junior Kwizera Mutebutsi netted the only goal of the game, which turned out to be the winner for the Birds, after being assisted with a great directional header from sophomore Dimi Martchev.
The varsity game was less inspiring, as the Birds fell 4-0 to the senior Oak Hills squad.
Sophomore Nik Aregood stepped up in a big way for the varsity squad in defense, shutting down multiple runs and winning 50-50 balls, and senior captain Peyton Barnes created numerous opportunities in the middle, including several shots for Fairmont.
The Birds play next on Tuesday at Miamisburg, with JV at 5:30 and varsity at 7:15.
