The Fairmont Men’s Varsity Soccer team worked hard for its win Tuesday night, securing the 1-0 victory over Miamisburg on Faculty Appreciation Night.
Prior to the win, more than two dozen Fairmont faculty members took to the field with the players and cheerleaders who had singled them out for helping them along their paths as scholar-athletes. Thank you for all you do every day to help our boys and girls succeed!!
In the game, the Birds fought the Vikings throughout the first half and almost midway through the second half before a true team goal broke the stalemate.
Junior Hunter Haas sent a long pass into the goal box that was met by the head of junior Lucas Gregory, who angled the ball down to the feet of junior Captain Peyton Barnes. Peyton, a center midfielder who also has played some center defense, expertly finished the pass into the back of the net for his first goal of the year.
The win brings the Birds to 2 wins, 4 ties and 3 losses on the year.
Between the varsity and JV games, the teams observed a moment of silence in honor of Terri Philhower, the mother of varsity player Riley Philhower. Terri, the mother of three Firebirds, was an awesome supporter of her children and Fairmont sports for many years. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her. The Birds dedicated this game to her memory.
The junior Birds had a good game against Miamisburg, finishing in a 2-2 tie. Sophomore Fabrice Uwihirwe scored both goals for the Birds — one a beautiful chip shot to beat the goalkeeper.
The Birds next take the field on Thursday against Centerville. JV kicks off at 5:30, followed by varsity around 7. We’re hoping for a big crowd against a key rival. See you there!!
