It was a hotly contested battle that saw formation changes and great plays, but the game marking the halfway point of the Fairmont Men’s Varsity Soccer 2017 season yielded a familiar result as the Birds came away with a tie against Cincinnati Oak Hills on Saturday.
After more than an hour of a defensive standoff, the Birds broke through to score first. Junior Captain Peyton Barnes sent a long free kick from the defensive half to the feet of senior Captain Caden Danner, who took a touch to evade a defender and buried it into the back of the net. The goal is Caden’s fourth on the year to lead all Fairmont scorers.
Unfortunately, the Birds only enjoyed the lead for about 5 minutes before the Highlanders equalized. The teams continued to fight until that final 10 minutes ran out, with the score 1-1.
The tie brings the varsity Birds to 1-4-3 on the year.
JV also battled Saturday, but fell to Oak Hills 2-0.
Fairmont plays this Tuesday at home against Miamisburg for Faculty Appreciation Night. The varsity players will publicly thank some of the Fairmont staff members who make a great difference in their lives. JV plays at 5:30, and varsity at 7.
