Coach Drake enters his 10th year as the head coach for the Firebirds. Over the past nine years, Coach Drake led the Firebirds to a 136-112 record.  Under Drake the Firebirds have won a GWOC Central Championship (2016) a District Championship (2009), Regional Runners up Trophy (2009), and a District Runners-up trophy (2010). 

During the 2015 season, Coach Drake was named GWOC Central Coach of the Year.

In 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 Coach Drake was chosen by his peers to coach at the Bob Ross Classic. Other coaching stints of Coach Drake’s have included, Bellbrook High School, Fairmont JV, Van Buren Middle School, and Crestview High School ACME team. Coach Drake teaches Business, Computers, and Credit Recovery Fairmont High School. This is his 17th year of teaching.

Coach Drake graduated from Crestview High School in Convoy, OH in 1996 where he was a three year letter winner in baseball. In 1995, the Knights advanced to the Regional semi-finals. In 2001, Coach Drake graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education. Also in 2005, Coach Drake received his Master’s Degree from Capella University. Coach Drake resides in Kettering with his beautiful wife, Lacy, their wonderful daughter Colbie, and their three dogs; Peyton, Oscar and Wilson.


Tyler Kilburn

Assistant Varsity Coach 

Tyler Kilburn is joining the Fairmont Baseball Coaching Staff for his sixth year of service as Varsity Pitching Coach. Kilburn is a 2006 graduate of Fairmont where he was a four year letter winner in golf, a three year letter winner in baseball, and received multiple scholar athlete awards. Kilburn was a state qualifier for golf his senior year and still
holds multiple school records for both sports.

After high school, Tyler went on to play both baseball and golf at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois. During his two year stent in Danville, Kilburn was an important part of both the golf and baseball teams and finished his baseball career with a record of 8-2 on the mound, along with a career 2.64 ERA. After graduating from DACC with an Associate of Arts and Science degree, Kilburn returned home to play golf and complete his education at Miami University – Middletown. He graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Integrative Studies Degree with focuses in Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and Art/Design.

Along with coaching the Firebirds, Tyler was the golf at Oakwood High School from 2013-2016. Where they were state qualifiers all four years and division II state champions in 2013. Aside from coaching, Tyler is a youth leader and media team ministry leader where he attends church. Tyler resides in Kettering with his wife Brittany.


Kevin Whitaker

JV Coach

Coach Whitaker enters his fifth season with the Fairmont Baseball Program, and 3rd consecutive season at the helm of the JV squad. Following his 19-4 Championship season as the Head Freshman Coach, he has had continued success at the Junior Varsity level.

A graduate of Oakwood High School in 2000, Coach Whitaker was a three year letter winner in both baseball and football. He earned First Team SWBL Honors in 1999 and 2000 for his achievements on the baseball diamond, and was a three time SWBL Scholar Athlete.

For the 15 years, Coach Whitaker has been involved with youth sports. He was a Program Coordinator for the YMCA of Greater Dayton, where he oversaw Pre-School and After Care Programs. While with the YMCA, he had the privilege of coaching T-Ball for youth in Trotwood as well as running a Health and Fitness program for hundreds of children in the Dayton region. Kevin made the jump to high school athletics in 2012.

Aside from baseball, Coach Whitaker was also the JV Golf Coach at Oakwood High School from 2014-2016. He has a passion for coaching high school athletics, and looks forward to continue building a strong Baseball program at Fairmont High School.

Coach Whitaker is the Safety Director for Ascent Safety Solutions, in Cincinnati. He lives in Kettering with his wife, Sarah and son Liam, who are also avid baseball fans.




Matt Mahaffey

Assistant Coach

Coach Mahaffey will be entering his 4th season as an assistant coach for the Fairmont Firebird baseball program.

Matt is a 1996 graduate of Kettering Faimont High School where he was a two year varsity baseball letter winner. In 95′ he was 1st team honorable mention as a junior in the W.O.L. (Western Ohio League). In 96′ he was 1st team all league W.O.L. as a senior.
Matt has been involved in coaching baseball for  years.  4 years as an asst. coach for the Kettering Bucks and EKRC Firebird summer select programs. He has spent the last 7 seasons as a head coach in the Gem City Throwbacks organization where they have competed against some of the finest talent in the Tri-State area.  Mahaffey is currently the head coach for the 17U Gem City Throwbacks.
Coach Mahaffey still resides in Kettering with his wife of 19 years and his 3 sons Colton, Brandon, and Austin.


Greg Silverman

Special Assistant

Coach Silverman is in his third year coaching Fairmont baseball. This is his seventh year of coaching, with previous tenures as an assistant at Kettering Middle School and as the JV Head Coach at West Carrollton High School, where he also coached football. 

Coach Silverman is also in his third year of teaching at Fairmont. He teaches American Government and Psychology. From 2011-2015, he was a social studies teacher at West Carrollton High School. He holds a B.S. Ed. degree from Ohio University and a M.Ed. degree from Wright State University. Coach Silverman and his wife, Marie, who teaches English at Fairmont, live in Kettering and have a two-year-old son, Tyler, and will add a baby girl in January, 2018. 

Coach Silverman is a Firebird baseball alum. He played from 2004-2007, earning two varsity letters, a team MVP, MVBCA All-Area, and two second-team All-GWOC awards as a Pitcher and a DH. He continued playing at Ohio University on the club team, winning an NCBA Mid-Atlantic Conference title in 2008. In high school, Coach Silverman was also a three-year letter winner in football.


David Steele

Freshman Coach

Coach Steele enters his first year as a Fairmont Baseball Coach. Coach Steele spent last year teaching at Jonathan Alder High School in Plain City, Ohio, while coaching basketball and baseball at St. Paris Graham.  Steele was a 2010 graduate of Fairmont High School and was a 3 year Varsity letterman in baseball. Steele played for Coach Drake in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Steele was apart of the District Champion and Regional Runner-Up team in 09’.
After high school Steele went to The University of Rio Grande and was a four year starter for Coach Brad Warnimont.  Steele pitched and played 3rd baseball for URG while graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Sports and Exercise Science. After college Steele went on to play Professional Baseball for the White Sands Pupfish in The Pecos League. Steele finished his career there with a 5-0 record and made an All-Star appearance as a rookie.
Coach Steele is very proud and excited to be back with Kettering Fairmont High School and he hopes to impact his students and players by turning them into great athletes, but better men. He really enjoys giving back to the game of baseball and using it to teach life lessons to the young men he will work with in the seasons to come.
Tommy Roush
Varsity Assistant
Coach Roush enters his 2nd year coaching Fairmont baseball. Coach Roush started his coaching career at Fairmont during his student teaching, however, has spent the last 3 years as a Varsity assistant at Tipp City High School where he teaches Spanish. Roush is a 2009 graduate of Fairmont High School and was a part of the District Champion and Regional Runner-Up team under Coach Drake in ’09.
After high school Coach Roush went on to play baseball at The University of Findlay where he was a four year starter. While at Findlay Coach Roush lettered all four years and was named all- conference 3 of the four years. In addition, Coach Roush earned the accolade of All-Region his junior year when he hit .374 and led the conference in doubles and rbi’s. 

Coach Roush has also coached for the Dayton Classics the last four years where he has worked teams ranging in age from 15 to 18. While with the Classics he has been able to work with some of the best talent in the Great Dayton/Cincinnati area and they have competed against some of the finest teams in the Midwest. He is currently the head coach for the U15 Classics team.

Coach Roush is very excited to be back with the Firebird’s and looks forward to teaching his players how to play the game the right way and develop as young men. He hopes by teaching his players how to respect the game they will learn life lessons they can utilize both on and off the field. He currently resides in Kettering with his wife Bethany (who is also a former Firebird) and daughter Addison.
